Boots in the Belfry!

June 8, 2012

Walking up the stone twisting staircase the first sight was dust covered boots stacked neatly on the deep church windowsill. Then I turned the corner into the most unique albergue! The belfry of St Jean de Batista church had been turned into a pilgrims post. Mattresses lay row by row on the old wooden floor each one tightly packed to it’s neighbour. This area overlooked a large kitchen from which wafted aromas of Spanish meats & potatoes to be enjoyed round two large long tables later. I tucked myself & my sleeping bag into the corner under the sloping roof & though yes I’m well & truly quasi moto now πŸ™‚ To get to Granon my path walked thru the pretty village of santo Domingo & coffee with more new friends. Suzanne a londoner now living in Australia & Marilyn Kevin & Carol from Cornwall. Then we all fell in with Nic from Canada. πŸ™‚ having settled ourselves like bats in the Belfry all 40 pilgrims were invited to a pilgrims blessing to help them on their camino. We hobbled in after spending the customary half hour dressing our blisters, my left foot now being more famous on the camino than Daniel Day Lewis’s . never mind Brenda Fricker getting an Oscar for her part in the movie… I’m nominating the inventor of compeed for an Oscar, a Bafta, & the Nobel peace prize. I’d be home on the next plane without it! It was a tiny village, one tiny shop, one tiny panoria & one tiny main street even though it was called Casa Major? Then round the corner from our belfry WOW a cathedral!!! Gilt alter high stone carved ceilings. Would give the Vatican a run for it’s money! But the blessing was very sweet before all 40 of us sat down to share our pilgrims meal. The wine & craic flowing ; camino camaraderie at it’s best! Burn Camino xxx
